Sublime (comprehension boundary)
The sublime is τ-categorically the *comprehension boundary phenomenon*: the structural event in which a finite observer encounters a structure whose invariance pattern overwhelms their motif-space's representational capacity, producing simultaneous overwhelm-and-elevation. Kant's mathematical sublime (vastness) and dynamical sublime (might) are formalized as two faces of the same boundary morphism between bounded `M_τ` and unbounded structural targets.
τ-Definition
The sublime is τ-categorically the *comprehension boundary phenomenon*: the structural event in which a finite observer encounters a structure whose invariance pattern overwhelms their motif-space's representational capacity, producing simultaneous overwhelm-and-elevation. Kant's mathematical sublime (vastness) and dynamical sublime (might) are formalized as two faces of the same boundary morphism between bounded `M_τ` and unbounded structural targets.
Categorical invariant. Sub = boundary morphism ∂(A, ∞) where A is the Aesthetic Functional (VII.D47) and ∞ marks structures at or beyond the agent's M_τ comprehension capacity; the sublime is the experience-type at this boundary (VII.D50).

Phenomenological Correlate
The sublime is instantiated whenever a finite observer encounters a structure whose pattern outstrips their representational capacity but whose invariance is still partly registered — vast natural scenes, the night sky, mathematical infinity, overwhelming music. Overwhelm and elevation co-occur because the agent registers (i) the failure of their motif-space to fully hold the pattern and (ii) the structural reality of the pattern itself.
Examples:
- Mathematical sublime — Cantor's hierarchy of infinities, the Mandelbrot boundary, infinite series whose limit is felt before computed
- Natural sublime — alpine ranges, the night sky, oceanic vastness; pattern partially registered, capacity overwhelmed
- Dynamical sublime — storm at sea, volcanic eruption; force pattern beyond the agent's safe-handling envelope
- Musical sublime — late Beethoven, Mahler 9, Bach Passions; structural depth exceeding moment-by-moment grasp
Register codomain: Diagrammatic register Reg_D registers the structural-invariance side; Commitment register Reg_C registers the elevation (the agent's stance toward what exceeds them); the simultaneous double readout is *constitutive* of the sublime experience.
