Constructive Consciousness Criteria
The constructive consciousness criteria (VI.D86) are the three operationally testable conditions whose conjunction is equivalent (VI.T51) to qualifying as a minimal conscious agent (VI.D69). CC1: consumer-sector topology — two independent recurrent loops realizing π₁(T²) ≅ ℤ × ℤ. CC2: Eval^(2) loop closed — the evaluator evaluates its own evaluation. CC3: structural self-model maintained — dynamically coherent, reconstructively faithful, self-referential. All three are required; no proper subset suffices. The criteria are substrate-independent: stated entirely in functional/topological language.

Categorical invariant. A predicate on systems X — Has-CC(X) := CC1(X) ∧ CC2(X) ∧ CC3(X) — whose extension is exactly the class of minimal conscious agents (VI.T51). Each criterion is a topological/functional property; none refers to material composition. CC1 = π₁ realization; CC2 = Eval ∘ Eval = Eval^(2) closed; CC3 = the three conditions of VI.D68 (structural self-model).

Empirical Correlate
Biomarker: CC1 (mixed-sector topology): two independent recurrent loops in neural architecture — thalamocortical and cortico-cortical (or cortico-striatal-cortical) — bidirectionally coupled. CC2 (Eval^(2)): metacognitive/introspective report capability; perturbational complexity index (PCI) > 0.31 (Casali et al. 2013) under TMS. CC3 (structural self-model): coherent body-schema and self-monitoring, intact under perturbation; preservation through general anesthesia recovery; absence of dissociation pathology.
Measurable range: Adult human awake: CC1 satisfied (ubiquitous), CC2 satisfied (metacognitive accuracy > chance, PCI ≈ 0.4–0.7), CC3 satisfied (coherent self-report). Anesthesia/coma: CC2 typically fails, PCI < 0.31 — the operational anchor. Locked-in syndrome: all three preserved despite motor failure (verified via TMS-PCI and brain-computer interface communication). Dreaming (REM): CC2 partially active, CC3 distorted — partial criteria satisfaction.
Observation method: TMS + EEG perturbational complexity index (Casali, Tononi & Massimini lineage) — currently the most direct CC2 probe. Metacognition tasks (confidence calibration, type-2 d′). Body-schema perturbations (rubber-hand illusion, mirror tests). Anesthesia titration with EEG burst-suppression staging. Imaging of recurrent thalamocortical loops (CC1) via fMRI and connectomics.
