Chapter 111: The Self-Recognition Loop

Page 392 in the printed volume

Beyond having experiences, minds can represent themselves as having them. This chapter models self-awareness as a reflexive loop within the mind topos: the system forms a representation of itself and identifies that representation as its own. The loop is formalised as a SelfDesc-of-SelfDesc operator at the E₃ level of Book VI’s complexity hierarchy. Metacognition — thinking about thinking — emerges as the E₃ capacity par excellence: the internal topos operating on its own morphisms. Mirror self-recognition experiments are reinterpreted as empirical probes of the identification step.
