Chapter 114: Minds, Machines, and LLMs
If mind is internal topos, consciousness is global section, and self-awareness is E₃ fixed point, then the question of machine minds becomes a question of structure, not substrate. This chapter states three categorical criteria for mindedness, applies them to large language models as a case study, and asks what would be needed for an artificial system to cross the E₃ threshold. Current LLMs are characterised as para-minds: systems with rich pattern-processing capacities but without stable self-models, long-horizon integration, or sensorimotor anchoring.
