The history of unification attempts suggests unification may require recognizing existing structure, not adding new structure. Maxwell unified E&M by recognizing one entity, not adding a fifth force. GUTs, strings, LQG each add structure (symmetry, dimensions, discreteness) creating new unexplained degrees of freedom.
