The binding energy curve determines which nuclear reactions release or absorb energy: fusion releases energy below the iron peak (A < 56, powering main-sequence stars), fission releases energy above it (A > 56); the astrophysical consequences (nucleosynthesis, stellar evolution) are deferred to Book V.
