A meson is a composite state |q bar{q}> formed from a quark mode chi_{m1,n1} and an antiquark mode chi_{-m2,-n2} such that the total color charge c_total = n1 mod 3 + (-n2) mod 3 equiv 0 mod 3 vanishes, making it a color singlet.
