Chapter 22: The Three Domains: Sector Taxonomy of Life

Woese’s three domains—Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukarya—are recast through the sector lens: Archaea are the persistence (α) archetype, Bacteria the agency (π) archetype, and Eukarya not a sector but a fiber-enabled regime whose nucleus and organelles permit operation in any sector plus the mixed sector. The phylogenetic tree becomes a sector-decorated graph in which horizontal gene transfer crosses sector boundaries.
